Ecotoxicological Assessment of the Sediment in Arroio Sapucaia, RS, Brazil, Using Different Sampling Devices and Test Organisms

Assessment of sediment quality in Arroio Sapucaia, a stream in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, was conducted at four locations along its course with use of two sampling devices (Eckman grab and “corer hand”) and two species of test organisms (Hyalella azteca and Ceriodaphnia dubia). This evaluation was performed from March/2000 through January/2001, using toxicity essays based on standard methodology. According to results of this study, there was no significant difference between sampling devices, with the exception of the first sampling location. Ecotoxicological evaluation containing benthic (H. azteca) and plankton (C. dubia) organisms indicate that results depend on which test organism is used, since three of the total sampling locations showed significant difference. In general, according to toxicity essays, monitoring results for Arroio Sapucaia indicate an increase in environmental deterioration along its sampling locations, from upstream to downstream.
