Behavior of Cubaris murina Brandt (Crustacea: Isopoda) in Soil Contaminated With Glyphosate: Avoidance Tests in Laboratory

Resumen

Acute tests and avoidance tests were carried out using laboratory populations of Cubaris murina, to assess their sensibility to glyphosate. The contaminant solutions were prepared by herbicide Roundup®. In the acute tests, ten offspring were confined and exposed to each treatment: soil with different concentrations of glyphosate and soil without contaminant (control). Mortality was observed after 7 days. The Spearman-Karber test was used to calculate the LC50 . In the avoidance tests, ten juveniles were put on the center of each recipient-test, with four portions of soil: three portions with different concentrations of glyphosate and one control. The preference of the isopods was registered after 1.5, 2, 3, 4 and 24 hours. ANOVA was used to verify whether there were significant differences among the mean number of isopods in each treatment and the control. The 7-d-LC50 was 35.5 mg gli/g soil. In the avoidance tests, significant differences (p < 0.05) in relation to the control, which indicated avoidance, occurred in all treatments, including 5.12 mg gli/g soil, already at 1.5 hour. The avoidance behavior was a very sensitive endpoint, assessed in low cost experiments, showing a rapid response and having an important ecological role.
