Abstract

This study is the results of analyses of water and sediment from three different points in Estância Velha stream (RS), which receives effluents from the leather and footwear industry, between the source and the municipal boundary. The samplings were performed during winter and summer 2003 using physicochemical and microbiological analyses and toxicity and mutagenicity tests with Allium cepa. The results obtained showed a significant correlation between low quality in the stream below the source and the discharge of compounds from industrial effluents and sewage.
