With the industrial, technological, and social advancements, it's indisputable that every alteration of nature aimed at benefiting humans generates consequences not only for the environment but also for the individuals who promote it. The use of plastic products, for instance, has been established based on society's everyday needs. In this regard, the increasingly global production of plasticizers such as phthalates stands out, present in the composition of construction materials, chemicals, hospital utensils, food packaging, household cleaning products, cosmetics, among others. However, these compounds are considered toxic, classified as environmental endocrine disruptors capable of compromising animal homeostasis, reproduction, and development. Hormone dependent organs, like the prostate, are particularly prone to alterations when exposed to phthalates. In this context, this study aims to present the main types of phthalates dispersed in the environment, highlighting their effects on the prostate. To achieve this, a literature review was conducted regarding oxidative stress, inflammation, and carcinogenesis, considering the main molecular pathways and events affected by phthalates, including epigenetics.
